month: February 2012

We were privileged to have the opportunity to photograph the Murnahan’s this past Sunday a couple of hours before the Super Bowl started in their home.  Many of you know Peggy as the owner of Mad Eliza’s Cakes and Mark her husband as Topeka’s Search Engine Optimization Guru (Geek ;-) ). They were my latest “victims” in my new families on film photography project.  They were great subjects! The whole session took about 45 minutes total to do. Mark or Peggy will have to let you in on what we came up with to get the expressions that we did on the kids faces!

The images were captured on a film camera made ~1975 on Kodak Tri-X film that was originally introduced in 1954.  I hand processed the film in our studio and scanned the film myself.  I had almost forgotten how much fun film is to use. You use a light meter to set your aperture and shutter speed then you take the images. It is incredibly liberating as a photographer just to be able to concentrate on your clients and not to feel the need to look at each shot as you take it in the digital viewing screen.  The result is that connection between the photographer and the subjects aren’t lost they only get stronger as the session progresses, it’s amazing!

I Spent last Saturday afternoon with the Burgess Family. As many of our friends and clients know I’ve been re-discovering the joys of black & white film. The Burgess family was a great opportunity to do some fun film images. Film has the advantage of giving a true “vintage” look that many of today’s digital filters and Photoshop plugins try to accomplish but the big advantage of film is it’s wide exposure latitude you don’t find in digital.  That means that with Black & White real film you can capture more emotions of the moment.

Think of what the value of images taken on a random Saturday afternoon will be in 14 years when Megan or Miles pull out of the driveway on there way to college will be. Imagine the even greater value of images taken on a regular basis over that 14 year period.  The job of a good photographer is not only to take good images but to work as a partner with your family over the years to “Capture Life’s Memories”.
